Diatomaceous earth/Diatomaceous earth filter aid
CAS #: 61790-53-2 (calcined powder)
CAS #: 68855-54-9 (fused calcined powder)
Usage: Used in the brewing industry, beverage industry, pharmaceutical industry, refining, sugar refining, and chemical industry.
Chemical composition
The chemical composition of diatomaceous earth is mainly amorphous SiO2, which exists in the form of SiO2 • nH2O. SiO2 usually accounts for more than 80%, up to 94%. It contains small amounts of Al2O3, Fe2O3, CaO, MgO, K2O, Na2O, P2O5, and organic matter, as well as some metal impurities such as Cr and Ba. The composition and content of diatomaceous earth mines vary in different regions.
Physical Properties
Diatomaceous earth has colors such as white, gray white, gray, light gray, light gray brown, light yellow, etc.; Density: 1.9~2.3g/cm3;Bulk density 0.34~0.65g/cm3; Melting point: 1650 ℃~1750 ℃; Specific surface area of 19-65cm2/g; Pore volume 0.45~0.98cm3/g; The water absorption rate is 2-4 times of its own volume. High chemical stability, insoluble in hydrochloric acid, easily soluble in alkali, with many excellent properties such as relative incompressibility, softness, sound insulation, wear resistance, and heat resistance.
Development and Application
Diatomaceous earth, due to its unique physicochemical properties, has been widely used as a filter aid, functional filler, catalyst carrier, pesticide and fertilizer carrier, insulation material, adsorbent, and bleaching material.
Filter aid:
Diatomaceous earth can be used as a filter aid in food, medicine, and environmental industries. For example, the use of diatomaceous earth filtration in the winemaking process can continuously update the filter bed, fast filtration speed, large yield; With a large surface area and strong adsorption capacity, it can filter out particles ranging from 0.1 to 1.0 μ m, reduce alcohol loss by about 1.4%, and improve production operating conditions. Diatomaceous earth filters can better improve the water quality of swimming pool circulating water treatment, and can save water and electricity in the operation and management of swimming pools. Secondly, diatomaceous earth has also been widely used in edible oils, pharmaceutical oral liquids, and other fields.
Adsorbent:
Diatomaceous earth is widely used in wastewater treatment due to its stable chemical properties, strong adsorption capacity, good filtration performance and insolubility in any strong acid. The pre-treatment of landfill leachate using diatomaceous earth flocculation precipitation method can preliminarily reduce CODCr and BOD5 in the leachate, remove pollutants such as SS, and is mainly used for urban wastewater, papermaking wastewater, printing and dyeing wastewater, slaughter wastewater, oily wastewater, and heavy metal wastewater.
